The Kick off meeting of the eighteen research and innovation projects funded in the framework of the ERA-NET Cofund AquaticPollutants, supported by the three Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) on Water, Oceans and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and the European Commission, will be held virtually on 30th September 2021. This meeting is organised in close collaboration with the AquaticPollutants Transfer Project, AquaticPollutantsTransNet, funded through the same ERA-NET Cofund.
These projects on risks posed to human health and the environment by pollutants and pathogens present in the water resources will present their research objectives and plan around three themes:
1: Measuring – Environmental behaviour of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in aquatic ecosystems
2: Evaluating – Risk assessment and management of CECs, pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria from aquatic ecosystems (inland, coastal and marine) to human health and environment
3: Taking Actions – Strategies to reduce CECs, pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in aquatic ecosystems (inland, coastal and marine)
This meeting will also be an opportunity for them to exchange with the Transfer Project group on their expectations for enhanced knowledge transfer and better results valorization.
As part of the ERA-Net Cofund AquaticPollutants, the AquaticPollutantsTransNet project will support knowledge transfer, scientific networking, and public engagement on aquatic pollutants.
This support will be conducted through two interacting phases:
- Phase 1 will identify key stakeholders and their knowledge demands pertaining to aquatic pollutants (CECs, AMR and pathogens) and develop innovative methods and strategies to improve the transfer of scientific results to policy makers, the public, and the health, agricultural and industrial sectors.
- Phase 2 will create synergies amongst the AquaticPollutants RDI funded projects and strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and implement multiple dissemination and exploitation routes with thematic (non-scientific) groups, political fora, scientific networks and citizens.
AquaticPollutantsTransNet has developed a video to present their role, objective and added-value for AquaticPollutants funded projects and society.
This video is available here.

Aquatic Ecosystems Services (ES) are the goods and benefits that ecosystems provide to people and society. They are included in the concept of “Nature’s contribution to people” described by IPBES (2018). The ES approach seeks to understand and use this relationship between nature and people to support decisions contributing to global sustainability. The Water JPI AQUATAP-ES research network has produced a briefing note on "Decision Support Systems for managing Aquatic Ecosystem Services". This briefing note can be downloaded here.
Decision Support Systems (DSS) are going to be more widely used in future in a wide variety of areas and confidence and trust in their performance is likely to increase. A DSS is a collection of (i) models (usually mathematical), (ii) its underlying data, (iii) appropriate analysis methods, (iv) relevant knowledge and (v) users that individually or in concert can assist in making informed decisions. In the case of AQUATAP-ES, these decisions relate to the management of water related ecosystems and the services they provide.
Decision Support Systems have a place in every aspect of policy formulation, implementation and in the operational management, including of aquatic systems. They can be used in both top-down and bottom-up configurations.
This briefing note explains why DSS are needed to:
- assist water resource & catchment managers, and policy makers
- inform and support robust decision making to protect and sustainably manage our freshwater ecosystems.
It provides examples of current DSS’s and ones under development and also highlights what the way forward is for DSS into the future.

Management of world’s forests must be water-centred
Forests and trees are integral to the global water cycle and therefore vital for water security – they regulate water quantity, quality, and timing and provide protective functions against (for example) soil and coastal erosion, flooding, and avalanches. Forested watersheds provide 75 percent of our freshwater, delivering water to over half the world’s population. A Guide to Forest-Water Management is the first comprehensive global publication to provide guidance on the contribution of forests for a holistic approach to water resource management, including the management, monitoring and valuation of forests to deliver water-related ecosystem services.
A Guide to Forest-Water Management was launched on 25 August 2021 at World Water Week and is co-published by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The report is available for download on FAO website here.
Related to this report, FAO and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) have produced an e-learning course, the Forest and Water Nexus, to help people understand the links between forests and water and how they translate these into benefits for people and the planet.
