Supporting projects

The Joint Programming Initiative on “Water Challenges for a Changing World”, Water JPI, has been implemented through the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) WatEUr funded by the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, the ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks2014 and the ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks2015 carried out within the frame of the European Programme Horizon 2020. WaterWorks2014 aimed at stepping up EU research and innovation cooperation in the water area, in particular for developing technological solutions and services for water systems. WaterWorks2015 was launched in collaboration with the FACCE-JPI to support research on the sustainable management of water resources in agriculture, forestry and freshwater aquaculture sectors.

The CSA IC4WATER on “Supporting international cooperation activities on water” is addressing water challenges and EU policy priorities in the water sector within a global perspective. The ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks2017 aims to address research and innovation to support the implementation of freshwater water policy on the thematic area “Closing the Water Cycle Gap – Sustainable Management of Water Resources”. The ERA-NET Cofund AquaticPollutants is a joint action between the Water JPI and two other JPIs, JPI Oceans on “Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans” and JPIAMR on “Antimicrobial Resistance”. The ERA-NET Cofund BiodivRestore is a collaboration between the Water JPI and the BiodivERsA network, to support research for the conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems and their biodiversity.

Thus, the Water JPI will implement its activities focused on alignment of research and innovation agendas at European and International level at least till 2025.

The Implementation Plan aims at delivering the Water JPI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) while maximizing its societal impact through different instruments which include strategic workshops, exploratory seminars, calls for proposals, the alignment of national water RDI programmes. The Implementation Plan for the period 2014-2016 is available online and was updated for the period 2017-2019 on the basis of the SRIA 2.0 and for the period 2020-2022 taking into account the SRIA 2025.

The latest version of the Implementation Plan is also based on the outputs of the Water JPI Task Forces on Interactions with Horizon 2020 & Horizon Europe, on Alignment, and on Research Infrastructures, as well as the outputs of the 2nd Alignment workshop and good practices workshops.
