H2020 funded project Hydrousa
A new h2020-funded project HYDROUSA (Demonstration of water loops with innovative regenerative business models for the Mediterranean region) has officially started on 1st July 2018 for a period of 54 months with a total budget of 12 M euros. the project kick-off meeting was held in Athens from 12 to 13 July.
Policy brief: the potential of the wastewater sector in the energy transition
Today, European wastewater treatment plants consume the equivalent of more than two power plants’ worth of energy every year as well as a considerable portion – about a fifth- of municipalities’ electricity bills. the costs incurred by society equate to approximately €2 billion a year. nonetheless, these plants could be producing up to twelve power plants’ worth of efficient, renewable, flexible energy to contribute towards a low-carbon, circular development of the European economy.
European list of strategic research infrastructures expands into new areas

Via the Societal Challenge 5 (Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials) Work Work Programme 2018-2019, the European Commission (EC) invites proposals for an ERA-nEt cofund which targets “Risks posed to human health and the environment by pollutants and pathogens present in water resources”.
JPIS Joint Declaration Presented at Austrian Presidency Conference
As part of the development the future Horizon Europe, the role of Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI) is under discussion. Based on the experiences of the 10 JPIs and their recently presented long-term visions and strategies, the conference focused on their role and contribution to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement mission-oriented programmes in horizon Europe.
Water JPI Advisory Board Meeting
The first meeting of the new Advisory Board members of the Water JPI, after the integration of 5 Scientific Board members and the enlargement of the Stakeholders Advisory Group to 4 International institutions (FAO, gWRC, OECD, Un Water) took took place in Dublin on 25 September 2018.

Water is a peer-reviewed open access journal on water science and technology, including the ecology and management of water resources, and is published monthly online.
SWIM project
The SWIM-H2020 SM Project (Sustainable Water Integrated Management and Horizon 2020 Support Mechanism 2016-2019) funded by the European Union aims to contribute to reduced marine pollution and a sustainable use of scarce water resources in the countries of North Africa and the Middle East (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia).
German funding measure ReWaM
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the funding measure ‘Regional Water Resources Management for Sustainable Protection of Waters in Germany’ (ReWaM) in 2015, with almost 30 million € within the framework of the funding priority ‘Sustainable Water Management’ (NaWaM). The projects’ funding period will end in 2018 or 2019.
WssTP Water Innovation Awards Winners 2018
During Water Innovation Europe 2018 conference “The road towards a Water-Smart Society: Overcoming the Water challenges of the future”, the WssTP Water Innovation Awards 2018 ceremony was held on the 13th of June. European Flood Awareness System
The European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) is the first European operational system for monitoring and forecasting floods across Europe. It provides complementary, flood early warning information up to 10 days in advance to its partners, the national/regional hydrological services and the European Response and Coordination Centre (ERCC).
New rules for Safer drinking water for all Europeans
Most people living in the EU enjoy very good access to high quality drinking water. This results from long standing EU legislation protecting Europeans and ensuring that they have access to high quality drinking water. The Commission wants to make sure that this high quality is preserved in the long run.
EEA report on European waters - Assessment of status and pressures, 2018
The European Environmental Agency (EEA) report “European waters - Assessment of status and pressures 2018” gives an updated check on over 130,000 surface and groundwater bodies monitored based on the data collected and reported from more than 160 so-called River Basin Management Plans covering the period 2010 to 2015.
SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation
The 2018 “SDG Index and Dashboards Report” provides a report card for country performance on the historic Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The annual report shows how leaders can deliver on their promise, and it urges countries not to lose the momentum for important reforms.

The three principal investigators of the Water JPI funded project PERSIST, Prof. Josep Mas-Pla, Prof. Corinne Le Gal La Salle and Prof. Christine Stumpp, are promoting the Water journal Special Issue covering the topic of Pharmaceutic compounds, as emerging organic contaminants, and their occurrence and transport in groundwater: sources, reactions and fate.
