Cooperation with United States

European Joint Programming Initiatives Opportunities for U.S.-EU Research Collaboration on Societal Challenges

From 29 to 31 January 2018, the Water JPI coordinator took part in a delegation to Washington, DC of six Joint Programming Initiatives - AMR, Climate, FACCE, HDHL, Oceans and Water - in the context of a European project intended to enhance research collaborations between European and U.S. public funders (BILAT-USA 4.0). This mission aimed at:

  • Enhancing Programme Level Cooperation between JPIs and U.S. funding agencies
  • Identifying and recommending future joint activities between U.S. and EU Member States / Associated Countries.

The mission was a follow-up of a similar event that took place in Brussels in November 2016 when members of U.S. federal agencies, as well as JPI representatives, had expressed their large interest to cooperate. It was organised around:

  • Bilateral visits aiming to deepen the discussions on cooperation modalities. The Water JPI had informal exchanges with the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and U.S. Department of State which has an inter-agencies Water research group.
  • A half-day public event, “European Joint Programming Initiatives – Opportunities for U.S.-EU Research Collaboration on Societal Challenges” co-organized with support of the EU Delegation in Washington, DC for presenting the networks and discussing concrete cooperation potentials with USA in a panel format. Dominique Darmendrail presented together with Venkat Lakshmi (NSF) the outcomes of their bilateral discussions.

A video recording of the event is available here.
