Governmental Research Funding Agency (FORMAS)

Funding Agency and Programme Manager

FORMAS is a governmental research funding agency under the Ministry of Environment; it is also related to other ministries, especially the Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications. FORMAS encourages and supports scientifically excellent and societally relevant research of importance for sustainable development within its areas of responsibility. These are environment, agricultural sciences and spatial planning. Funded research covers a wide range of approaches from basic research to more applied efforts. FORMAS research funding is primarily bottom-up, and inter-and transdisciplinary research is encouraged. The council also provides mechanisms for communication of research results and stimulates the public debate on issues of concern, originating from or related to research for sustainable development.
