Through its Programmes (Administration; Technology Innovation; International Cooperation and Resources; Research Development and Support; and Socio-economic Innovation Partnerships) and several entities that work alongside it, the Department is accomplishing ground-breaking science and enhancing the well-being of all South Africans.

Areas of expertise

Ms Vineela Pillay is currently employed by the South African Department of Science & Technology, as the Senior Science & Technology Representative to the EU and is based in Brussels. In her current role she facilitates the EU-SA science and technology cooperation; providing support to various initiatives; growing partnerships in new and emerging areas; leveraging resources and support for strategic priorities as well as strengthening the cooperation.
Before taking up this post, Ms Pillay was the Chief Director for Overseas Bilateral Cooperation at the Department of Science & Technology. She managed the portfolio of bilateral science and technology cooperation with countries in Europe & the Gulf as well as in the Americas & Asia regions. In engaging with bilateral partners, she negotiated value addition to the South Africa science system, promoting research, exchanges, human capital development as well as policy dialogues in key science, technology and innovation priority areas.
Ms Pillay has also been involved in environmental and sustainable development issues through various roles, including as Senior Policy Advisor in International Sustainable Development and Trade Co-operation at the South African National Department of Environmental Affairs. A large part of the portfolio included engagement with multilateral environmental agreements. She also has experience in national level environmental and sustainability planning, having worked with the various tiers of Government in South Africa.
Ms Pillay holds three postgraduate degrees, including a Master Degree in Science (MSc); a Master Degree in Business Leadership (MBL); BSc (hons), with experience in international relations, the science and technology sector as well as the environmental sector.
