Dear readers of the Water JPI newsletter,
This is the first newsletter of 2025. This year will be marked above all by the official conclusion of the Water JPI. Launched in 2011, the initiative has funded over 100 research projects, established several knowledge hubs, and initiated two Thematic Annual Programming (TAP) actions. In addition, the Water JPI has played a key role in strategic alignment among its members, leading to the publication and updates of its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). Beyond Europe, the Water JPI has also carried out numerous international actions, enhancing its global visibility and enabling international participation in joint calls.
Following the decision of the Governing Board in November 2023, the Water JPI will officially conclude in November 2025. To mark this milestone, a final conference will be held in Málaga (Spain) on the 23rd and 24th October. The event will showcase key success stories from the Water JPI whilst also offering a forward-looking perspective on how its results can be transferred to the Water4All Partnership.
One of the sessions at the final Water JPI conference will focus on the impact assessment of funded projects. Led by ISPRA (Italy) and supported by the Water4All Partnership, the impact assessment aims to provide a deeper understanding of the outputs of funded projects and their contribution to shaping European and national water policies as well as research programmes.
In this edition of the Water JPI newsletter, you will also find updates on the SD-WISHEES project. The SD-WISHEES TAP action was been officially launched at the end of February 2025, and the first draft of the project’s roadmap is now available. This document offers a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge gaps related to the management of cultural heritage in the face of hydroclimatic extreme events.
Additionally, this newsletter features a selection of key European and international conferences taking place this year.
As we prepare for the closure of the initiative, we remain committed to keeping you informed about ongoing activities. Notably, the Water JPI website is undergoing a restructuring to better highlight the results of funded projects. In the meantime, stay connected through our social media channels for the latest updates.
Happy reading!

Two years after the project’s kick-off, the SD WISHEES TAP action was launched on the 20th and 21st February 2025. This marks a major milestone for the project, which aims to foster collaboration with widening countries.
A TAP (“Thematic Annual Programming”) action is a network of national projects designed to enhance collaboration and synergies between thematically linked initiatives. The SD-WISHEES TAP, which will run for nearly two years, includes projects related to the impacts of hydroclimatic extreme events on cultural heritage.
The kick-off meeting of the SD-WISHEES TAP was held in Paris, at the French National Research Agency (ANR) and it gathered projects from the following countries (in alphabetical order): France, Greece, Malta, Moldova and Romania. The two-day kick-off meeting featured a structured agenda:
- Day 1. The TAP action tool was presented (objectives, modalities of participation, governance). This presentation was followed by a presentation from Dr. Mary Kelly Quinn, who coordinated one of the Water JPI’s TAP on ecosystem services. All coordinators were then invited to make a presentation of their respective projects.
- Day 2. Participants were divided into two groups. The first one, uniting all project coordinators, worked on the implementation plan of the TAP. This allowed the identification of activities to be carried out by the group till the end of the TAP. The second group, gathering representatives from funding agencies, discussed alignment and widening strategies in order to improve the participation of widening countries in the Framework Programme. Notably, this session included the participation of Mr. Marnix Surgeon from the European Commission.
The kick-off meeting of the SD-WISHEES TAP proved to be highly productive. A number of possible activities were proposed by participants, who demonstrated enthusiasm for this initiative. Planned outputs include a projects’ booklet, a policy brief, visits and lab exchanges… Just the beginning of a promising journey!
News on the progress will be shared on LinkedIn and the SD-WISHEES website. Stay tuned for more information!

The SD-WISHEES project held its General Assembly in Mombasa, coinciding with its participation in the Africa24 conference on the Conservation of Built Heritage in Africa. This milestone event, organized in a hybrid format, brought most of the 16 project partners together in person for the first time, fostering stronger connections and paving the way for more impactful collaboration.
During the meeting, the consortium reviewed the progress of the past two years, shared updates on ongoing activities, and outlined the vision for the next phase of the project. Key discussions covered financial management, the strategic organization of upcoming events such as workshops and showcases, and innovative approaches to amplify the project’s influence.
A significant focus was placed on the technical work packages, including the launch of the TAP (read more here), which evaluates the state of the art, addresses challenges, and identifies priority projects. Updates on cultural heritage partnerships and progress on stakeholder engagement highlighted the project’s expanding reach. The consortium also explored potential funding avenues, including a COST action proposal.
Communication efforts and stakeholder feedback were central to the discussions, as partners examined project dashboards and reviewed outreach strategies. Insights into challenges related to participation in transnational research and innovation programs also led to valuable recommendations for improving inclusivity.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing the SD-WISHEES mission and leveraging partnerships to ensure sustainable outcomes for cultural heritage conservation in the nexus of water, climate, and heritage.

Wetsus will host the IWA Resource Recovery Conference in Leeuwarden from May 19th to May 23rd, 2025. This prestigious international event, co-organized with the IWA Resource Recovery Cluster, Wageningen University & Research (WUR), and Delft University of Technology (TUDelft), offers a unique opportunity to celebrate 15 years of innovation in a sector where the Netherlands has long been at the forefront. Now it is time to transform these concepts to business examples. Resource recovery is a very inspiring topic but it has not been an easy journey and many lessons have been learned in both upscaling novel technologies and developing new markets.
The conference aims to be a meeting point between academia and industry to ensure that research and industry can learn and inspire each other, thus working towards scaled-up and impactful solutions. The future water leaders, the Young Water Professionals, are also intended to be put in the spotlight, and the link with policymakers is aimed to be strengthened to ensure that the potential of resource recovery is stimulated rather than hindered by legal frameworks.
The conference will begin on Monday, May 19th with five dynamic workshops, exploring a diverse range of topics including art, fundamental research, and business development, all centred around resource recovery. Following the workshops, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Leeuwarden through a variety of engaging tours, and network during the welcome cocktail reception at the Wetsus building. The subsequent three days, held at the Harmonie Theatre, will focus on the central question: How can resource recovery from waste become a reality? Each day will open with an inspiring plenary session featuring renowned keynote speakers and panel discussions.
- Tuesday, May 20th will focus on the future of resource recovery.
- Wednesday, May 21st will delve into the latest research developments in academia.
- Thursday, May 22nd will highlight industry perspectives on the practical implementation of resource recovery.
Throughout these days, parallel sessions will feature expert talks from international speakers, carefully selected from a pool of 275 submitted abstracts by our Scientific Committee comprised of 62 experts.
The conference will conclude with four technical tours, offering participants the chance to visit some of the Netherlands’ most innovative industrial sites where state-of-the-art resource recovery technologies are being implemented. For those seeking an additional adventure, a sailing weekend to the stunning Wadden Islands will be available, providing a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the region.
