Pilot Call 2013 - CSA WatEUr
The Water JPI launched its first common call for proposals under CSA WatEUr in 2013.
This pilot call supported multinational, collaborative research and innovation projects addressing the theme “Emerging Water Contaminants – Anthropogenic Pollutants and Pathogens.” Seven projects were recommended for funding, with a total budget of €9 million. These projects were selected following evaluation by an international panel.

The Coordination and Support Action (CSA) WatEUr played a pivotal role in the successful development and implementation of the Water JPI, "Water Challenges for a Changing World." This initiative aimed to achieve sustainable water systems to support a resilient economy in Europe and beyond. WatEUr facilitated the structuring of the Water JPI to advance its objectives and actively contributed to building the European Research Area (ERA).
Through WatEUr, the Water JPI benefited researchers, policymakers, water authorities, utility operators, industries, farmers, and citizens by fostering innovative solutions to address global water challenges. These solutions included ensuring a safe supply of clean drinking water, mitigating risks from emerging contaminants and pathogens, addressing water hazards such as floods and droughts, and promoting a transition toward a water-efficient economy in Europe.
WatEUr also supported harmonizing research agendas and activities among partner countries, enhanced European leadership in water science and technology, optimized the use of public research funds, and facilitated the exchange of best practices across national programs. Recognizing the transboundary nature of water resources, WatEUr helped address fragmentation, prevent duplication of efforts, and ensure sufficient critical mass to tackle freshwater challenges.
The kick-off meeting for the CSA WatEUr-supported pilot call projects took place in Brussels on March 11, 2015. It brought together representatives of funding ministries, national agencies, and researchers involved in seven transnational collaborative projects. The event introduced researchers to the Water JPI community, encouraged networking, and strengthened the interface between science and policy.
