International cooperation workshops

Two geographic workshops to develop “RDI International Cooperation for tackling global water challenges” were organised in 2017 as part of the activities to be conducted within the Work Package 6 of the ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks2015, and the related Task 6.2 on International Cooperation:

These workshops provided the occasion for participants to:

  • Continue the discussions with the countries already contacted under previous activities since the Water JPI creation in order to developing long term partnerships;
  • Develop cooperation with existing international initiatives (e.g. geographical ERA-NETs);
  • Identify possible cooperation models with funding agencies / programme owners.

Based on suggestions and recommendations of the participants in the two workshops, the Water JPI decided to ensure the follow-up by implementing a roadmap on International Cooperation development (part of the activities to be conducted within the CSA IC4Water, in particular the Work Package 2 - Strategy for international cooperation).

In 2017, with the aim of reviewing and assessing the Water JPI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda in the light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) a Exploratory Workshop took place in Dublin. The workshop was successful in identifying a number of SRIA gaps in relation to the UN SDGs and to propose possible thematic priorities for a Joint Transnational Call on SDGs.

Another workshop on international cooperation was scheduled to look at opportunities to develop a common strategy for International Cooperation with other European Initiatives. This workshop entitled “Towards a Common Strategy on International Cooperation”, was held on the 19th September 2018 in Vienna, Austria. This first workshop was targeted at European initiatives and the Regional initiatives (e.g. BONUS, PRIMA), European Policy-makers and other relevant stakeholders to discuss the current State of Play of International Cooperation and exchange views & share experiences to identify common barriers as well as common practices.

The 2019 Water Joint Programming Initiative Workshop on “Towards a Common Strategy on International Cooperation” targeting researchers involved in international RDI projects took place on the 25th June 2019 in Paris, France. The Water JPI invited projects and networks of researchers working with African countries, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Georgia, India, Jordan, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Tunisia, Ukraine and USA.

    Also in 2019, a second workshop was held in December in Lisbon. The “Future Cooperation in Research and Innovation with countries beyond Europe” workshop targeted International Organisations and institutions beyond EU.

    In 2020, the third workshop with peer-EU Initiatives took place to discuss and progress the proposed Water JPI International Cooperation Strategy.

    A series of others workshops are already planned to elaborate a common strategy with other relevant EU initiatives on international cooperation in the context of research, development and innovation activities.
