Success of the Water JPI is dependent upon willingness to share and to proactively encourage alignment of national research agendas, existing and in future. Many of the activities in the Co-ordination and Support Action of the Water JPI (WatEUr) facilitate and strengthen alignment. These include the mapping of national research projects and programmes, development of agreed pan-European priorities, as demonstrated by the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), common agreement on instruments to be applied by the Water JPI, Joint calls and participation in ERA-NETs. One of the tasks within WatEUr is specifically focused upon harmonisation of agendas with the objectives of:

  • Examining opportunities for alignment
  • Reducing duplication and fragmentation
  • Increasing and monitoring coordination and collaboration

Activities in relation to alignment are taking place under the Co-ordination and Support Action (CSA) WatEUr which supports the implementation of the Water JPI and the additional activities of the two ERA-NET Cofunds managed by the Water JPI (WaterWorks2014 and WaterWorks2015).

Top ten recommendations and priorities actions from the 2nd Water JPI Workshop on Alignment (Nov. 2015)

Short Term (in next 6 months)

Translate the non-technical vision document into language of each member states. Disseminate the SRIA 2.0 in an effective manner at EU and National levels (in native languages). Prepare policy relevant flyers on the Water JPI for water directors and managers. Use the mid-term meeting/ERA-NETs of those organisations involved in the pilot call as opportunities to develop wider engagement.

Medium Term (in next 2 Years)

Arrange a meeting of research funders in member states to explain the work of the Water JPI. Improve contacts with water economic sector (e.g. WssTP) and, where possible, create clusters to discuss and generate new research topics with SMEs and innovators (along the supply-chain) Consider all relevant actions related to the EU Water Framework Directive and any associated issues related to climate change.

Long Term (over next 5 Years)

Help the countries without a national SRIA to define priorities for water research. Develop mechanisms to gather and respond to wider national level RDI perspectives. Upgrade the Water JPI SRIA as the European Agenda (PC level).

The WATER JPI is a relevant structure for Horizon 2020

Both the Water JPI and Horizon 2020 use public funds to achieve their goals, and enjoy a significant area of synergy in their respective research priorities. The JPI provides a channel for dialogue with the EC on future Horizon 2020 calls. Since its launch, the EC has been very supportive of the Water JPI and a non-voting member of its Governing Board.
