Summary:
The nitrogen (N) cycle is of critical importance in the marine environment as it controls the availability of nitrogen, a limiting factor of primary productivity. Microorganisms drive many of the essential and unique processes of the nitrogen cycle. This project will focus on the critical step of nitrification in coastal sediments with a focus on ammonia oxidation in the sediments of Murrisk Bay, which is a small tidal inlet of Clew Bay, Co. Mayo of economic importance to the shell and fin-fish industry.
